Mental Health professionals say the negative economic climate, job losses, poverty and lack of support from family and friends, are among the contributing factors. While some argue that there are not enough mental health services available to ordinary working class people, others say stigma is keeping people away from receiving accessible treatment.

Airs: 15 March 2012, 9:00 p.m. - A week before the commemoration of Human Rights Day, this week’s Special Assignment re-broadcasts a programme that brought us the experiences of Zimbabwean women as they try to come to South Africa, in search for greener pastures. The viewer is taken into the dangerous zone dubbed “no man’s land” between the borders of Zimbabwe and South Africa. It is here where border gangs known as “guma-gumas” operate with blatant impunity, raping women and children.

Silent Killer

Airs: 01 March 2012, 9:00 p.m. - This week on Special Assignment we bring you the story of two former mineworkers in Welkom, who are suffering from this disease. Sello Masheane and Ramokase Mabea worked in the mines for 34 and 22 years respectively. Both were diagnosed with silicosis while working underground but believe that they have not been adequately compensated for contracting the disease in the mines. They are pursuing a legal claim against their former employers.

Airs: 23 February 2012, 9:00 p.m. - This follow-up will revisit the history of Prison Broadcast Network (PBN), its evolution from a single CD-Player hooked up to the prison intercom system to the only organization in the world to house a radio station, sound studio and television studio in a Correctional Centre. We will also follow the journeys of two successful graduates of the programme as they attempt to be re-integrated into society and implement their skills acquired through PBN training in the professional world.
